The first task in this class was to learn about what 'gamification' is and how it is integrated in the classroom. When I first saw this word, I had no idea how this related to a University-level course. Would we be playing games in the classroom? Kind of.
'Gamification' is the idea of creating games or game-like elements within an unrelated aspect of learning. Students can increase their levels, "power-up", and earn badges as they complete their journey through learning. Gamification is a great way to get students engaged in their education.
As I begin my first placement in a Grade Six classroom, I can see gamification being utilized in so many ways. My students are currently obsessed with playing video games, so what better way to engage my students then to create a game within their educative journey!
